<< ¡Estás en Yucatán ahora! >>

Wohoo! Finally, I can start writing about BEING in Mérida, not just about preparing for it!

GREETINGS FROM MÉXICO!

Today is day number 3 in this beautiful city! Strangely enough, it's already being to feel like a second home. I'll skip all the details of my trip from Illinois to Mérida, so I can leave room for the cool, interesting stuff. First off, my host family is amazing! I love my mama y papa yucateca so much. They always go out of their way to make us feel at home. This is actually their 33rd year of hosting students studying abroad. Yeah, they're just that cool. And to top it all off, not only do they have my roommate Rachel and I staying with them, but in addition two more girls from our program and two from UCLA. Probecito papa :)

Today was our second day of classes en La Universidad Modelo. Our profes are pretty cool, but it definitely gets my mind working, and working hard. Unlike previous Spanish classes, there is absolutely no English. Pero, está bueno. It it just sometimes hard to comprehend everything during a 7:00 AM class.

The buildings here are absolutely beautiful and the people are wonderful. And the food, hijole! It's like a dream! Guanabanas, empanadas, tacos, frijoles, arroz con pollo, caldo, mangos, horchata...everything is so delicious!

Later on today a group of us are going to the city Progreso to go to the beach!!!!! I am SO excited! I haven't been to a beach in 12 years! Plus, it's an absolutely gorgeous day, not to hot, although it is very humid.

Bueno, enough of me. Time to let the pictures do the talking!
All packed and ready to go...such a bitter sweet moment.
Beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico from the airplane!
Cool monument we saw driving into Mérida for the first time! Still need to figure out what it is called...

First bus ride! We getting to be pro's at this because we do it every day. Can you find the gringos?

Our first dinner with the whole family. In addition to 4 BYU students, our parents are hosting 2 girls from UCLA. Our papá is at the head, mamá to the right, Caitlin (BYU), Esmeralda (UCLA), Nancy (UCLA), other Laura (BYU), and my roommate Rachel (BYU).
Rachel bought una hamaca our second day here. Look how happy she is!
LOOK AT HOW BIG THIS AVOCADO IS!
The biggest crucifix I've ever seen in el Catedral del San Ildefonso.
